pictorial Hand weven Carpets
At first glance, the carpet appears to be a picture or painting not a textile. Iranian weavers have mastered their craft to the point where they now have the ability to copy even a photo of a person's face onto a carpet, and in most cases the quality of the woven carpet is higher than that of the photo. Pictorial carpets are generally made with a combination of silk and wool, and these kind of carpets are only weaved by the most skillful carpet weavers.
For example, to weave the face of a person on a carpet is not an easy task and requires professional carpet weavers with at least 20-30 years of experience in carpet weaving. These artisans have extraordinary skill and knowledge on how to use just the right blend of silk and wool to make just a single knot on a carpet to give it a more 3D feel. The quality of pictorial carpets are usually between 70 to 100 raj (Number of knots per 7 cm of the widths of the rug). Raj is the unit of knot density. It shows the rigidity of the rug which is based on the number of strings used for the foundation of the rug. Strings materials are usually used on pictorial carpets made of silk which is the same material used for very fine rugs.
